✨ Have you ever found yourself pondering on the happenings at Glowmade Towers?

Glowmade is the home to a team of talented and passionate creators, and support staff where their creativity and care bubbles over into our games and studio culture daily, and – frankly – we all benefit from it!

It’s always fascinating to understand what makes people tick, and today’s Getting To Know-made (do you get it?) is with Dee Patel, Senior Producer at Glowmade!

Onward, dear readers, onward! â˜ï¸ðŸ˜

✨Dee Patel

Senior Producer at Glowmade and Professional Cat Herder, proud owner of two dogs and a beard.

What’s your role at Glowmade (and what do you actually do)?

I’m a Senior Producer. My role is to ensure the development of the project goes as smoothly as possible. We plan the development roadmap of the game and keep that communication flowing throughout. It is basically all spreadsheets, Gantt charts, and all those little bits of project and team management.

How would your mum/dad describe your job?

I still don’t think my Mom actually understands what I do, and I’ve been working in games for 17 years. My dad on the other hand, is like my biggest cheerleader. He used to buy the games I was credited on, just so he could brag about it to the Gamestop employees.

Your job title in your own words?

Professional Cat Herder.

A wearer of many, many hats. 🎩👌

Tell our dear readers a little about yourself, we want to know all about the origin story of Dee!

I’ve been in the industry for almost 17 years. I started off as a QA Tester and just worked my way up through QA and into Production. I figured out quite early on that I’m not as creative as I like to believe I am, or have the patience for engineering. However, planning, project management, and team management was totally my jam. I have been incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunities I got, and these opportunities took me across the world and live out this dream of working in games :).

Can you tell our community how your career in the video game industry came to be?

I come from an immigrant working class home. A true latchkey kid with both parents that worked. TV/movies and video games were more than just something to keep my occupied or an escape. It was often how I was able to view the world, or be able to engage with others over a shared passion. When I was younger, I never considered I could work on games. There were very few resources out there so I kinda stopped thinking about it. It wasn’t until my early 20’s that I fell into a QA Tester role on a terrible zero hour contract, that I realized I am here! I was so determined to do as much as I could and be of value so I can stay in this often crazy industry.

Share something you love doing outside of everything video games.

I like to talk. Correction… I love to talk. I have had the privilege of working and living in many different cities in different countries and it had really opened me up to engage with others, especially those that come from different backgrounds. So if you ever catch me out at the pub or anywhere social…there is a good chance I’m either in some big group conversation or talking to strangers.

Who or what inspires you?

Anyone that is is living their true self. People who have fought for their identity and who they are. It took quite a while for me to figure out who I am, and I’m still learning a lot about myself, but I take great inspiration from everyone that has gone against what is expected of them and have followed through with what they are passionate about.

:’) We are learning all the time after all! Thank you Dee.

Share something you appreciate about yourself. I know I mentioned not overthinking, but think a little about this one. Give yourself a pat on your back.

What a question! I have to give a fair bit of credit to my parents for this, but they instilled some great values on me and my sister on how we treat others and to be empathetic, and I take that into my leadership approach in my job. We wont always understand others, or what they may be going through, but we can listen and we can try to relate. Empathy goes a very long way. Also, I’m on this epic hair journey. I did not cut my hair or trim my beard for the majority of the pandemic…and I must say that my hair is glorious. 🙂

What’s the best thing about working at Glowmade?

I’m still very new to the team, but have felt very welcome by all. I’ve been looking for a home that is a small team where the passion for games and what we want to make is paramount. I’ve felt very welcome from the early conversations with the founders, to my first week here. Super stoked to be on board and cant wait to share what we are cooking up with everyone 🙂

What do you want from your career? What goals are you looking forward to vaulting past?

I am where I want to be. The producer life fits me great, and being able to provide that support for our incredibly talented team so they can realize their vision is just everything. I’ve been very fortunate to have these opportunities, paying that forward and bringing up future devs is the next step for me,

If you could have been involved in the development of ANY game, which would it be?

You don’t want me involved in any creative development of a game. You will end up with my dogs as central characters, and me demanding to do Voice Overs.

…âœï¸â€¦Dee had…âœï¸â€¦the best….âœï¸â€¦idea ever…âœï¸â€¦today. Got it. ðŸ¤

What are your top tips for someone looking to get into games?

Listen, talk and share. There are so many resources out there that can help you get an idea of what kind of different roles there are in the industry, as well as get you started on making your own games. There has never been a better time to make your first game, and it continues to be even more accessible to everyone.

In your opinion, who is the keeper of the cutest Glowmade pet?

This is such a dreaded question. I have two dogs, and even with that bias I don’t dare rate the cuteness. (my pups are mega cute though)

Who on the team is most likely to make a mess in the office?

It’s going to be me. There I said it. I’m messy. My workspace is usually littered with post it notes, crumpled up paper, old drinks bottles. I’m sorry to all at Glowmade that will witness this. They say a messy workplace is a sign of genius though…

Who on the team inspires you the most? (don’t worry, I won’t tell them… honest! 😉 )

We have such a varied group of mega talented people. I’m always in constant awe of the teams I work with…that being said my answer can also be purchased for a price.

Who’s the first to make a round of tea?

I’m going to say something very unpopular…I don’t get British tea. I was born here, I have Indian parents. Tea is meant to run through these veins…but I just can’t get down with the little PG Tips tea bag, and with the cold milk poured over? Nope. However, I’ll happily make some brew for others when I’m prepping myself a coffee.

There’s one biscuit left in the tin and you’re all eyeing it up… what is it?

I can tell you with absolute certainty that this figure that I’m maintaining is not achievable if I was to let a solo biscuit go untouched. Especially if there is a chocolate hobnob left…

How do you maintain the team feeling and connection whilst in lockdown?

You will always find me talking to people, and finding out what everyone is up to. I don’t consider small chat when I genuinely care to know. The important thing is to keep talking and engaging when you feel you are up for it. If you want to chat about the news or what just dropped on Netflix, or want to go off into some coop adventures in a game, then I’m always down.

‘I have two dogs, and even with that bias I don’t dare rate the cuteness. (my pups are mega cute though)’ –

Cuteness eternally confirmed! Meet Lunchbox & little Tuna. N’awww!

If you had to pick one game to play for the rest of your life (let’s hope it never comes to that), what would it be?

Everyone is going to think I’m crazy for this…but it would be Everquest. The classic MMO from 1999. It’s an mmo that you would have had to experience at the time, because there are very few quality of life improvements that modern mmos have. I can spend hours in that game just sitting and regening mana.

What game are you most looking forward to?

These days I’m really just looking forward to games that I know my friends will also want to play. These days these tend to be these little surprises that get released from smaller studios.

What’s your personal motto?

I think my own personal mottos are ridden with expletives, so let’s go with the great quote “”If you can’t love yourself. How in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” from the great RuPaul!

Yes, Mamma Ru. 💅

What’s the last thing you ate?

Grilled cheese, but with some American processed cheese I found at a local supermarket here in Berlin. Sometimes you just want something that is simple and reminds you of home

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I’m really quite weird and annoying in the comforts of my own home. It’s a side of me that really only my partner gets to see and hear. I make annoying noises and voices. I love repetitive beats and vocals. Some things are just really fun to say…over and over. Cue song “Peanut butter” RuPaul ft Big Freedia

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Watching Dr Pimple Popper is oddly satisfying. It’s so gross…yet I can’t look away.
